Ratzer | Herbert | eXtracello (AT)

Karl Ratzer barely needs introduction – the Viennese guitarist has been right up there with the world class for many decades. In the 60s of the past century, he started out with formations such as The Slaves, Charles Ryders Corporation, C-Department, or Gipsy Love and left a mark on the Austrian rock history before he moved to the USA and to jazz. Today, he is the grand seigneur of the local scene. Composer and double bass player Peter Herbert, too, is among the most competent and respected Austrian musicians. As a solo artist and as a band musician, he leads a busy schedule with an average of 100 concerts annually performing throughout the world (www.azizamusic.com). The formation eXtracello, known as “the most flamboyant string quartet” comprises cellists Edda Breit, Melissa Coleman, Margarethe Herbert, and Gudula Urban. With an insatiable curiosity and vitality, they happily traverse musical styles and eras; from the renaissance to jazz, pop, rock, and modernism. Their programmes include own compositions and improvisations as a means of expression for the four highly diverse, strong personalities. In 2019, they released their second album “Catch The Cat”. Now, they partner with charismatic guitarist and singer Karl Ratzer who has worked with his international septet (“Underground System”), made an acclaimed record with his superb trio, played with Johannes Enders as well as his own Karl Ratzer Quintet; entering first-rate chamber music territory.
